Today’s Bible Journaling With Me tutorial, on how to paint a wave, uses both watercolor and acrylic. It is quite beginner friendly, as the shape is simple and there really are no rules as to how to apply the paint! We also get to do a little finger painting, which is just so fun!

The Process

  • First, paint a watercolor background.
  • Then, use a pencil to lightly draw out your wave shape.
  • Next, use a variety of blue watercolors (these can be mixed yourself, or if you have the Gansai Tambi watercolor set like me, you can just pick from the many color choices) to paint the wave. I prefer to dab in the colors into different sections of the wave, so some parts are dark navy blue, while other are blue-green. I also recommend adding a layer, letting it dry, and then adding another layer or two. This helps bring more interest and dimension to the wave.
  • Then comes the fun finger painting part. Take a small amount of white acrylic paint and use your finger to dab it onto the top portion of your wave. Apply a small amount throughout the wave as well. This gives the impression of the foam/bubbles that are often found in waves.
  • Finish the page off however you please! I added brush calligraphy of my main focus verses, but you can write out a prayer in normal handwriting, use stamps or sticker, etc.
